Rick Santorum Says Don't Use Word 'Middle Class' as He Does (Video)

Former GOP congressman and presidential candidate Rick Santorum told an audience at the Iowa State Fair in Lyon County, Iowa on Saturday that the term “middle class” is “Marxism talk.”

Even though Santorum himself has used the phrase "middle class" several times (see below), he scolded Democrats, Republicans and President Obama for daring to use it as well, noted RightWingWatch.org (video below).

Santorum, who strongly supported the military invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, also claimed that Republicans, unlike Democrats, “value the dignity of every human life."

“What does Barack Obama talk about all the time? The middle class. Since when in America do we have classes? Since when in America are people stuck in areas or defined places that’s called a class? That’s Marxism talk,” claimed Santorum.

“When Republicans get up and talk about ‘the middle class,’ we’re buying into their rhetoric of dividing America. Stop it. There’s no class in America. And call them on it."

Santorum used the phrase "middle class" in a speech in 2005, when he stated: "In fact, it provides a much needed incentive for them to be able to continue to hire employees and grow, which is obviously the ticket to middle-class America."

In 2006, Santorum said: "The college tuition deduction is an important and popular education tax benefit, particularly for the middle class."

Santorum also said in 2006: "If more middle-class Americans plan and save for their long-term care needs, an added benefit will be that the significant financial pressures will be lessened on safety-net programs such as Medicaid - helping us preserve and strengthen these programs for those in need."
