Rep. Steve Scalise Claims President Obama has Attacked 'Freedom of Speech and Religion' (Audio)

| by Michael Allen

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) recently appeared on the radio program 'Washington Watch' with Family Research Council president Tony Perkins, where he claimed that President Obama had "gone after freedom of speech and religion" (audio below).

However, Rep. Scalise gave no examples of President Obama going after freedom of speech or religion.

According to RightWingWatch.org, Rep. Scalise also claimed that President Obama's State of the Union address was "going after our second amendment rights, our freedom to defend ourselves by having the ability to own guns for law-abiding citizens."

However, President Obama never said he was taking away citizen's rights to defend themselves or own guns. President Obama clearly stated in his address that he supported banning only assault weapons and magazines that house large numbers of bullets, which polls show most Americans agree with.

Rep. Scalise also claimed President Obama was trying to exploit “tragedies that he uses to his own benefit,” but gave no examples.

"Right, look, just go in order. Right after that, he’s gone after freedom of speech and religion, now in that same speech he is going after our second amendment rights, our freedom to defend ourselves by having the ability to own guns for law-abiding citizens," said. Rep. Scalise. "All of these things he talked about, these tragedies that he uses to his own benefit, none of them would have been prevented by his own gun control measures, it just takes away the rights of law-abiding citizens."
