A recent petition launched on the White House’s "We the People" website has suggested a new national anthem: Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.”
Cyrus herself has nothing to do with the petition and has yet to release a comment. The petition apparently arose from an organic passion for blindly patriotic Top 40 hits.
As of 1 p.m. EST on Monday, the petition received 382 of the 100,000 signatures needed by Aug. 1 to achieve White House commentary. The petition promises that changing the national anthem to Cyrus’s party anthem is what’s best for the country.
According to Mashable, the “Party in the USA” video is the 23rd most viewed on YouTube and has accumulated 342 million views.
Though the idea of a crowd devoutly singing “Party in the USA” before every baseball game is strange, this is not the most unusual petition the White House has received.
Earlier this year, the White House rejected a petition to begin construction of the Star Wars’ Death Star by 2016. Other petitions have demanded that NASA construct a Star Trek inspired USS Enterprise interplanetary spaceship and called for the U.S. mint to make a platinum trillion-dollar coin.
