FLOTUS And Putin Discuss Gender Equality At G-20

| by Sheena Vasani

First lady Melania Trump discussed gender equality with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit in Germany.

The first lady was reportedly sent to wrap up the meeting between her husband and the Russian leader, which had run over the scheduled 30 minutes, reports AOL.

"There was just such a level of engagement and exchange, neither one of them wanted to stop," explained U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, CNN reports.

In addition to discussing gender equality, the first lady also spoke about female economic empowerment as well as other topics on the G-20 agenda.

"I think there was certain sympathy," said Putin's press secretary Dimitry Peskov.

It's not the first time Melania has spoken about gender equality in an official setting.

"To the young people here today: I ask you to allow the triumphs exemplified by these heroic women to inspire you in your own lives and to remind yourself that you, too, are capable of greatness," the first lady said at the State Department’s International Women of Courage award ceremonies, reports Newsweek. "Realize that your first steps will always involve taking a leap of faith by believing in yourself, while choosing to replace fear for hope. Let these brave women serve as daily inspiration."

While the first lady spoke of gender issues, President Donald Trump discussed topics including Syria, terrorism, Ukraine and cyber security with Putin.

Putin later expressed satisfaction with both meetings.

"I can say with certainty that Putin was pleased after the meeting," added Peskov, the Express reports. "And while I don’t personally know Donald Trump, my impression was that he was satisfied as well."

The Russian leader in particular praised his meeting with the U.S. president, reports Time.

"As for relations on personal level, I believe we have established them," Putin said. "Trump's TV persona differs sharply from the real man. He is a very straightforward person, grasps precisely what his interlocutor says, quickly analyzes and responds to questions or new elements of the discussion."

He added: "I think that if we develop our relations in the same way, there is every reason to believe that we would be able to at least partially restore the level of interaction that we need."

While Putin may have been satisfied with the meetings, protesters outside were certainly not.

Earlier, Melania's arrival at the summit had been delayed due to protests outside her hotel, reported CNN.

"Hamburg police couldn't provide clearance for us to leave," the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told reporters.
