A number of people out in the blogosphere today are sharing their opinion that Monica Lewinsky is doing Hillary Clinton a favor by choosing now to publish her Vanity Fair piece about her affair with Bill Clinton.
The affair would be an attacking point for Hillary’s potential 2016 GOP opponent, the reasoning goes, so clearing the air now would leave assaults on Bill Clinton’s character impotent.
There are plenty of reasons to see where people are coming from on this one. After all, possible GOP presidential candidate Rand Paul has wasted no time asking why Democrats are proud to align with a “sexual predator” like Bill Clinton.
Lewinsky’s side of the story cuts right through the Bill Clinton as sexual predator narrative.
"Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship,” Lewinsky writes. “Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”
Washington Post writer Ruth Marcus says this statement “defuses Paul’s line of attack.” On Fox News yesterday, Lynne Cheney speculated that the timing of Lewinsky’s piece is the Clinton’s way of getting “that story out of the way” ahead of Hillary’s possible 2016 run.
“I really wonder if this isn’t an effort on the Clintons’ part to get that story out of the way,” Cheney asked.
I’m not going to sit here and speculate about whether the Clinton’s deliberately put Lewinsky up to writing this piece now. I’m out of tin foil at the moment. I agree, though, that addressing this elephant in the room is best done now rather than in the heat of a future presidential campaign. Ultimately, I think Hillary’s GOP opponent will choose to focus more on her alleged Benghazi failure than this old news.
