An undocumented immigrant has been accused of murdering his girlfriend in Louisiana before fleeing to Texas with his three children.
43-year-old Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas and two of his children were allegedly part of the massive influx of immigrants that recently took place in south Texas. Monterroso-Navas was captured by Border Patrol agents but subsequently released after he was found to have no criminal history.
Monterroso-Navas' girlfriend, 24-year-old Heidi Monroy, was also arrested by Border Patrol agents after traveling to the United States from Honduras at a different time than Monterroso-Navas. Monroy, too, was released.
According to the New York Daily News, Monroy was found beaten to death in her bathtub in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. Monterroso-Navas was captured the following day in Katy, Texas. Three of his children, one of whom was birthed by Monroy, were found with Monterroso-Navas unharmed.
According to the USA Today, the crime was discovered when Monroy’s other two children, a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old, asked their neighbor for help with their mother. Law enforcement officials claim Monroy was pronounced dead at the scene of severe head wounds.
The motive behind the attack is unclear, although Monterroso-Navas fled with his three biological children while leaving behind Monroy’s other two kids.
