Arizona Republican Mistakes YMCA Campers for Undocumented Immigrants (Video)

Arizona State Rep. Adam Kwasman (R) mistook a school bus carrying happy YMCA campers for fearful undocumented immigrant children during an anti-immigrant protest in Oracle, Ariz., yesterday.

ThinkProgress.org reported that when Kwasman saw the bus, he tweeted (and then later deleted):

Bus coming in. This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law.

However, in reality, U.S. law requires the federal government to care for unaccompanied minor children from non-bordering countries until they have an immigration hearing before a judge.

“I was actually able to see some of the children in the buses,” Kwasman told a reporter from AZCentral.com. “The fear on their faces….This is not compassion.”

The reporter informed Kwasman that the bus was full of YMCA kids, not immigrant children (video below).

"Those children were sad too," Kwasman responded.

However, according to a 12 News reporter, the children were laughing and taking pictures of the press.

Kwasman later tweeted: “Last tweet not the bus of illegal immigrant children. Thank God.”

The U.S. government has had to bus some of the 50,000 unaccompanied immigrant children to other states because Texas, where most of the immigration has happened, cannot process all of the undocumented kids.

The bus that Kwasman and other anti-immigrant protesters were waiting for didn't arrive yesterday.
