One of Adolf Hitler's food tasters has begun to tell what it was like to work for the Nazi leader. A few months after she turned 95, Margot Woelk decided to reveal the secret of what she did during World War II.
Woelk spent two and a half years as one of 15 women who tasted Hitler's food to make sure it was safe to eat. She primarily worked in the"Wolf's Lair," the command center in which Hitler spent most of his time towards the end of the war.
"He was a vegetarian. He never ate any meat during the entire time I was there," Woelk said. "And Hitler was so paranoid that the British would poison him — that's why he had 15 girls taste the food before he ate it himself."
Although many people were dealing with food shortages during the war, that wasn’t a problem for Woelk and the other girls, Fox News reported.
"The food was delicious; only the best vegetables, asparagus, bell peppers, everything you can imagine. And always with a side of rice or pasta," she said. "But this constant fear — we knew of all those poisoning rumors and could never enjoy the food. Every day we feared it was going to be our last meal."
Hitler’s fears about someone trying to kill him were not baseless. One of his colonel’s once tried to kill him by detonating a bomb in the “Wolf’s Lair.”
"We were sitting on wooden benches when we heard and felt an incredible big bang," she said. "We fell off the benches, and I heard someone shouting, 'Hitler is dead!' But he wasn't.”
Now that her own life is winding down, Woelk felt the need to talk about what she went through during the war.
"For decades, I tried to shake off those memories," she said. "But they always came back to haunt me at night."
