According to a CBS News report, “Republicans on Capitol Hill” leaked inaccurate quotes about White House emails that were related to the September 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya (video below).
CBS News stated: "Republicans leaked what they said was a quote from Rhodes: 'We must make sure that the talking points reflect all agency equities, including those of the State Department, and we don't want to undermine the FBI investigation.'"
CNN reported on Tuesday that Rhodes’ email did not mention the State Department, but actually said: "We need to resolve this in a way that respects all of the relevant equities, particularly the investigation."
CBS News also reported that Republicans provided a false quote attributed to State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland: "The penultimate point is a paragraph talking about all the previous warnings provided by the Agency (CIA) about al-Qaeda's presence and activities of al-Qaeda."
Nuland’s actual email did not mention "al-Qaeda," but in fact said: "The penultimate point could be abused by members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to Agency warnings."
CBS News said there was no evidence linking the White House to any changes made on the talking points, and that all edits were actually mutual decisions by the State Department and the Central Investigation Agency (CIA).
