President Dwight D. Eisenhower famously warned America in 1960 during his farewell address about how the "industrial military complex" was gaining too much influence on America's foreign policy.

While that might sound like fodder for conspiracy theorists, there's no denying reports in 2013 about how Kristi Rogers, the wife of Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., made big bucks as the CEO of Aegis LLC, a "security" defense contractor company.

Her husband just happens to be the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which advocated for lucrative contracts for Aegis LLC, noted

This past week, Mike Lofgren, a former GOP congressional staff member for 28 years, told PBS host Bill Moyers about how corporate America and the national security state form the "Deep State," notes the Daily Kos (video below).

"It is the red thread that runs through the history of the last three decades," said Lofgren. "It is how we had deregulation, financialization of the economy, the Wall Street bust, the erosion or our civil liberties and perpetual war,”

Lofgren stated that the "Deep State" stretches from Washington D.C. to Wall Street to Silicon Valley.

Lofgren also mentioned there are over 400,000 contractors and private citizens who have top-secret government security clearances.

In addition to his interview, Lofgren wrote an article entitled “Anatomy of the Deep State” for

"At a time when there was heated debate about continuing meat inspections and civilian air traffic control because of the budget crisis, our government was somehow able to commit $115 million to keeping a civil war going in Syria and to pay at least 100 million pounds to the United Kingdom’s Government Communications Headquarters to buy influence over and access to that country’s intelligence," the article reads. "Since 2007, two bridges carrying interstate highways have collapsed due to inadequate maintenance of infrastructure, one killing 13 people. During that same period of time, the government spent $1.7 billion constructing a [NSA] building in Utah that is the size of 17 football fields."
