Three U.S. Navy sailors from the USS Ross were hit with rocks, were manhandled and had plastic bags pulled over their heads by protesters in Instanbul, Turkey.
The protesters reportedly yelled, "Yankee, go home!" and tossed red paint (symbolizing blood) on the sailors today.
Fortunately, CNN made a copy of the video (below) before it was censored by YouTube.
"US Navy officials are working with the embassy and NCIS to investigate the incident," Capt. Greg Hicks, a spokesman for U.S. European Command, told CNN. "The three sailors were unharmed and are safely back aboard. They did not require medical attention."
"The incident does not reflect the hospitality nor the welcome reception our ships receive in port in Turkey," added Hicks.
“Soldiers from the occupying country think they can walk around freely in Eminonu,” Youth Association of Turkey spokesman Melik Dibek told The Guardian. “It’s obvious why they’ve anchored here, because of their ambitions in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. American imperialism is the reason why the middle east has turned into a chamber of fire.”
Turkish police have reportedly detained 12 people who were allegedly part of the attack.
