Two alt-right protesters interrupted a modern staging of the play "Julius Caesar" in New York City's Central Park on June 16 (video below).
Laura Loomer, who works for the alt-right website The Rebel, rushed the stage while Jack Posobiec, a popular social media alt-right personality, filmed her and shouted Nazi references, according to the New York Post.
Loomer stood on the stage and yelled: "Stop the normalization of political violence against the right! This is unacceptable! "
Loomer was apparently referring to a Trump-like character who is depicted as Caesar, and is stabbed to death in the play.
Members of the audience shouted at Loomer to "get off the stage," while a voice announced that the show would be paused and called for security.
When security guards came on the stage to escort Loomer off, the crowd booed her.
Posobiec suddenly stood up and shouted at the actors and/or the audience: "You are all Goebbels! You are all Nazis like Joseph Goebbels! This is Goebbels! You are all Goebbels! You are inciting terrorists! The blood of Steve Scalis is on your hands!"
Security escorted Posobiec out while he repeatedly shouted, "Goebbels would be proud!"
Authorities reportedly charged Loomer with trespassing and disorderly conduct.
Oskar Eustis of the Public Theater issued a statement, which Kurt Chirbas of NBC News tweeted on June 16:
Two protesters disrupted our show tonight; we stopped the show for less than a minute and our stage manager handled it beautifully. The staff removed the protesters peacefully, and the show resumed with the line "Liberty! Freedom!" The audience rose to their feet to thank the actors, and we joyfully continued. Free speech for all, but let’s not stop the show.
Loomer tweeted on June 16: "I'm out of jail, but I'm not apologetic. Thanks to everyone who is supporting me & condemning political violence."
Posobiec told Fox News' radio host Todd Starnes why the protest happened:
We were protesting what we saw was the normalization of violence. I couldn't believe they were going on with the play in light of what happened with the attack on Congressman [Steve] Scalise.
This play was savage and brutal. He is stabbed multiple times, running around stage, crawling through blood. It made my blood run cold seeing Americans cheering a depiction of their president being stabbed 100 times with 100 blades.
This Manhattan Central Park crowd was on their feet cheering - they were cheering as an actor dressed as the president was stabbed to death.
Ben Shapiro, editor-in-chief of the conservative Daily Wire, voiced his opinion of Loomer's protest on Twitter on June 16: "This is total, complete horse crap. She invaded a public performance to obstruct it. She has no right to the stage."
