West Virginia Delegate Brian Kurcaba, a Republican, reportedly said on Feb. 5 that it was "beautiful" how an "awful" rape could produce a child.
Kurcaba allegedly made his comment during a debate in the West Virginia House Health Committee in regards to a bill that would outlaw abortions after 22 weeks.
Charleston Gazette reporter David Gutman was on the scene and tweeted, "'Obviously rape is awful...' says Delegate Brian Kurcaba, R-Monongalia. 'What is beautiful is the child that could come from this.'"
A previous bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks was passed by the GOP-controlled West Virginia legislature in 2014, but Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, a Democrat, vetoed it, noted RawStory.com.
In response, Republicans recently passed this new bill in the House Health Committee by a vote of 20-5.
According to the Charleston Gazette, the new bill says that in medical emergencies “an abortion … shall terminate the pregnancy in the manner which, in reasonable medical judgment, provides the best opportunity for the fetus to survive.”
