Appearing last night on CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight,' Romney Campaign Co-Chair and former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu claimed that General Colin Powell endorsed President Obama because he is black, reports ThinkProgress.org (video below).
Sununu said: "Well, I think that when you have somebody of your own race that you’re proud of being President of the United States. I applaud Colin for standing with him."
After some outrage in the media, Sununu quickly walked back his remarks and said in a statement: "Colin Powell is a friend and I respect the endorsement decision he made, I do not doubt that it was based on anything but his support of the President’s policies. Piers Morgan’s question was whether Colin Powell should leave the party, and I don’t think he should."
ThinkProgress.org reports that Sununu has a history making demeaning remarks about President Obama including:
“He spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something.”
"I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”
“No class, wants to be cool. Sacrifices the dignity of the presidency for appearing cool to a magazine that works for some of his base.”
