In 2007, the Portland Trailblazers were faced with a dilemma with the first pick in the NBA draft: Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. They opted for Oden, and since Durant is already one of the best players in the NBA and Oden can’t stop being injured, it’s safe to say they made the right choice.

It seems like Oden was a rookie just days ago, but his contract is already up and he’s contributed next to nothing. In a chat on OregonLive.com, GM Rich Cho said that Oden (microfracture surgery on his knee) is still “a ways away” from resuming any kind of basketball activity.

“He’s a ways away,” Cho said. “I’m not sure exactly, but he’s a ways away.”

He was then asked about his realistic expectations for Oden.

I think he’ll be back,” Cho said. “He’s working hard. His surgeon says the microfracture’s healing well, and that’s all I can go by is what the doctors say and how hard he’s working. A lot of that’s up to him and how hard he works and we’ll go from there.”

“He’s a ways away. I’m not sure exactly, but he’s a ways away.”

Oden is a 23-year old free agent and the team will need to make a decision on his contract. Cho was asked if they plan on re-signing him.

“The season just ended four days ago,” Cho said. “We can’t even tender Greg a qualifying offer until the day after the Finals, and we have until June 30 to do that, and he’ll be a priority during the offseason.”

So you’re going to do that?

“As long as he’s working hard and his rehab is going well, I’m pretty sure we’ll put in a qualifying offer.”

Tough to let a seven-footer walk away, especially since in the limited time that he’s actually been on the court, he’s been pretty good. But that health issue is huge. It’s still up for debate as to whether the Trailblazers made out better with Oden than the Seattle Supersonics did with Durant.
