The old saying goes "you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family." President Obama is learning that is so true, because his family apparently contains three of the leading Republican voices of the day -- Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and George W. Bush.
According to the web site Ancestry.com, Obama is distant cousins with all three -- very distant. Obama and Palin are tenth counsins, he and Limbaugh also tenth cousins, but once removed, and Obama and Bush are 11th cousins.
Palin and Obama are connected through John Smith, a pastor in Massachusetts.
"Smith was against the persecution of the Quakers," Anastasia Tyler of Ancestry.com said. "He was a very socially conscious man."
Bush and Obama are connected through Samuel Hinckley, who was John Smith's father-in-law. That also makes Bush and Palin 11th cousins as well.
Obama's link to Limbaugh is through a Virginia land baron named Richmond Terrell.
Ancestry.com has previously linked Obama with billionaire Warren Buffett, actor Brad Pitt, and most famously, former Vice President Dick Cheney.
"We are always looking for ways to show how interesting family history can be," Tyler said.
