When the San Francisco 49ers selected Alex Smith with the No. 1-overall pick in the 2005 draft, they thought they had their quarterback of the future. Well, that didn’t turn out so hot and if you look at the other QB’s on their roster – Troy Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis – the guy to lead the team just isn’t a current member of the Niners.
Apparently, their general manager would agree with that assessment. Trent Baalke was a guest on PFT‘s new ProFootball Talk Live show thingy and he told Florio that the team needs to find a quarterback of the future.
“Is the quarterback of the future on this roster?” Baalke said. “I think it’s obvious that he isn’t at this point.”
Yet another reason why we thought it was funny when Mike Singletary said this season that he needed Alex Smith to take the next step in his progression. Yeah um, that ain’t happening. He is what he is at this point. The Niners have the 7th selection in this year’s draft and we can probably assume it will get spent on a quarterback.
Too bad Andrew Luck is staying at Stanford. They wouldn’t have gotten him unless they traded up, but it would mean that Cam Newton slides down another notch.
