According to the Associated Press, NBC has won the rights to four more Olympic Games through the year 2020 in deal that is valued to be worth more $4 billion.
Among the other groups in the running for the rights to host the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the 2018 and 2020 Games whose host sites have not been selected yet were Disney’s ESPN/ABC and News Corp.’s Fox Sports. The latter company publicly congratulated NBC when the news went public.
Many wondered if NBC losing Dick Ebersol -- who oversaw production of 10 Olympics since 1992 -- would somehow hinder the network’s shot at landing the upcoming games. As it turns out, it didn’t.
NBC has hosted every Summer Olympics broadcast since 1988 and every Winter Games since 2002.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, Jacques Rogge is scheduled to host a news conference to officially announce the news at 2 p.m. eastern time.
