If you and your partner are trying to conceive, there are several natural remedies that may help you become more fertile. Before you use them, you’ll want to consider several issues:
1. Are you having regular menstrual cycles?
2. Are you ovulating?
3. Do you have any underlying medical issues, or are you taking medication?
Your menstrual cycle should be 21 to 35 days long, and regular – that is, you should be having a period roughly every month. You can determine if you’re ovulating by charting your basal body temperature every morning, and waiting for the spike in temperature that indicates ovulation. You may also want to use kits. It’s important to visit a doctor to make sure you don’t have medical problems that might hinder your getting pregnant. Check with your doctor before you begin taking fertility-enhancing herbal remedies, as they could conflict with other medication you might be taking.
Evening Primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, an essential fatty acid. It’s good for creating fertile-quality cervical mucus around the time of ovulation, so that your vagina and cervix are hospitable environments for sperm to survive. Fertile cervical mucus should look and feel like egg whites – clear and stretchy. Only take evening primrose oil from menstruation to ovulation, because it can induce uterine contractions.
Another cervical mucus remedy involves augmenting your own cervical mucus with actual egg whites. It sounds somewhat gross, and raw eggs always carry the risk of food-borne illness, but if you can stomach it, you should insert raw egg whites inside your vagina before you have sexual intercourse.
A study in the American Journal of Public Health found that drinking half a cup or more of a day doubled a woman’s chance of conception each menstrual cycle. It’s thought that the powerful antioxidants in green tea have something to do with its effect on the ability to conceive.
If you’re worried you may be suffering from irregular cycles, anovulation (failure to ovulate), or a short luteal phase, Vitex (chasteberry) may help. The length of the luteal phase – the post-ovulation phase of your cycle – is important because that’s the time a fertilized egg implants into the lining of your uterus. If that phase is too short, menstruation will occur too soon, causing an early miscarriage. Vitex is an herb that’s believed to regulate progesterone and estrogen. It comes in pill or tincture form. If you’re already taking progesterone, check with your doctor before taking Vitex.
Vitamins B and C are also good for conception. If you’re trying to conceive, you should be taking prenatal vitamins containing these vitamins, especially folic acid, one of the forms of vitamin B: 400mcg of folic acid daily has been shown to help prevent spina bifida in fetuses. Try to begin taking prenatal vitamins six months before you plan to conceive.
