MMAJunkie.com spoke with Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, Alistair Overeem, and asked him about the upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. “I have been looking for a big fight for more than a year now… Tournament or no tournament, Werdum was going to be my first fight in Strikeforce…All the fighters in that tournament are good, so there are no easy fights. I’m a little surprised about [the bracket set up], and I don’t know why this bracket is designed this way, but my job is to fight. I’m not picking opponents, so if that’s the way they made the bracket, so be it. I can show the American fans that I’m the No. 1 fighter of Strikeforce. Entering such a tournament is not only great for the MMA fans but also a great way to prove that I’m the best fighter in the world.” I don’t know if he’ll be the best if he wins this, but he’ll definitely be one of the best, if he’s not already. This is a hell of a tournament and the winner will deserve all the praise when he comes out of it on top.
UEven though the UFC tried out both middleweights and welterweights for the upcoming 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter, MMAJunkie.com is reporting that only the welterweights will be on the show when it begins filming later this month. UFC officials also revealed that this season will once again go with the 28 fighter format that they’ve used in the last two seasons, with two of the losing fighters getting a chance to fight in the “wild card” fight. The coaches for this season are expected to be announced later in the week. Sweet! I love TUF, every season. I hate the shenanigans that some fighters display, but the show itself is quite entertaining. Hopefully we get some vocal coaches this year too.
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Thiago Silva will meet Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 130 in May. AWESOME! I like both guys because they want to take your head off. The winner will no doubt be “in the mix” for a title shot.
Nam Phan will get his rematch with Leonard Garcia, as MMAJunkie.com reports that the bout is headed to UFC Fight Night 24 in March. Another great booking by the UFC. Phan won the first fight, no matter what the judges said. This rematch will be just as entertaining as the first one, I’m sure.
Bellator officials announced on Monday that they have added longtime MMA veteran Joe “Diesel” Riggs to their middleweight division. This is a solid signing by Bellator. There aren’t many fights I’d like to see Riggs in, but Riggs against Hector Lombard? Yes, please.
