There is a reality show on TLC called "Toddlers and Tiaras" that highlights what some people call the bizarre world of child beauty pageants.
Wednesday night's episode featured a segment that some might consider to be child abuse. A mother put her nine-year-old daughter through painful eyebrow waxing, justifying it by saying, "A little bit of pain to win a better title? She'll take it all day long."
According to a description from the Daily Mail:
Chloe, nine, from Forney in Texas, can be seen screwing her face up in shock and pain as she undergoes the procedure in a professional salon in preparation for a contest. While the child braces herself to be plucked and preened, her mother Jamie hovers over her and nods approvingly... As the first wax strip is ripped from the child's brow she looks shocked and clutches her inflamed eyes.
"It was pretty bad," Chloe said after the ordeal.
Jamie said she is just trying to give Chloe her best chance to win. 'If it would come down to facial beauty alone, she doesn't have that particular look that a lot of judges are looking for. She does have brown eyes with the dirty blonde hair. It doesn't stand out like a beautiful red-head or a blonde-haired, blue-eyed child."
Jamie also got her daughter temporary veneers for her teeth because Chloe has lost some teeth and has others coming in, just like every typical nine-year-old.
"I call her my little jack-o-lantern because right now some teeth are all the way down, some aren't, some are completely missing," Jamie said. "Having your teeth look good does of course make a difference on stage."
Chloe seems to have bought into her mother's line of thinking. "I like wearing my flipper so I don't look like a jack-o-lantern. I'm not going to be a jack-o-lantern for Halloween because jack-o-lanterns are fat."
TLC did not provide the clip from last night's show, but here is a segment from a previous episode that illustrates the painful eyebrow waxing procedure:
