A family is suing a hospital in China after the medical staff accidentally dragged a newborn baby boy across the floor, resulting in his death.
Closed-circuit TV footage caught the moment when Shang Shao, 45, was being taken to surgery in a wheelchair. Shao, who was only seven months pregnant when her water broke, gave birth while being wheeled into surgery but none of the nurses appear to have noticed and the baby was dragged along the floor.
The baby boy had fatal head injuries. He was apparently dragged several feet across the floor before nurses noticed a trail of blood and realized what had happened.
The family is suing the hospital in Luoyang City in China’s Henan province.
A hospital spokesman issued a statement on the matter: “The baby was taken into intensive care but died soon after of intracranial hematomas, a rupturing of a blood vessel between the skull and brain. The doctor who suggested she be given a caesarean has been suspended from duty. He was inexperienced and should have consulted a senior doctor.
“The nurses taking the mother have been disciplined as they should not have moved her in a wheelchair. They have been demoted and given warnings.
“This was a terrible incident and our hearts go out to the family.”
The baby’s father, Pan Mai, told the Daily Mail that, “This is the most traumatic day of our lives.”
