Try Different Forms of Meditation to Relieve Stress

Meditation is not one size fits all and finding the right fit for you will ensure a better rate of success.

A new study from researchers at SF State’s Institute for Holistic Health Studies shows that new meditators need to select methods that they are most comfortable with in order to succeed and stay away from whatever is fashionable at the moment.

Enjoy the benefits; find your method

Finding a comfortable method means you are more likely to stay with it and enjoy the many personal and medical benefits. As Adam Burke, the author of the study and professor of Health Education at SF State, puts it,

“Because of the increase in both general and clinical use of meditation, you want to make sure you’re finding the right method for each person.”

Many styles for many people

There have been very few studies comparing the multiple methods to each other to examine preference or clinical benefits. Burke compared four styles: Mantra, Mindfulness, Zen and Qigong Visualization. The study taught the methods to 247 people. Each revealed their preferences at the end of the study. Mantra and Mindfulness were preferred by 31%; Zen at 22% and Qigong at 14.8%. With preferences being notable, the study proved not one type is better than any other.

Before quitting, try a new method

“If someone is exposed to a particular technique through the media or a healthcare provider, they might assume because it’s popular it’s the best for everyone,” Burke said. “But that’s like saying because a pink dress or a blue sport coat is popular this year, it’s going to look good on everybody. In truth, different people like different things. One size does not fit all.”
