Former Girlfriend: Clarence Thomas Obsessed with Porn

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

It was an issue that had gone away for 20 years, but the wife of Clarence Thomas chose to dredge it up by asking Anita Hill to apologize for saying her husband sexually harassed her. Predictably, people are now coming out of the woodwork with their own stories.

Lillian McEwen was a colleague and one-time girlfriend to Thomas from 1981-1985. She now tells The Washington Post that Thomas was "obsessed with porn," as well as the bodies of his female coworkers.

"He was always actively watching the women he worked with to see if they could be potential partners," McEwen, a former assistant U.S. attorney, law professor and judge, said. "It was a hobby of his."

McEwen said she has kept quiet for the past 20 years to protect her career and image. But now, "I have nothing to be afraid of." It should be noted that McEwen is currently shopping her memoirs.

"I have no hostility toward him," she said. "It is just that he has manufactured a different reality over time. That's the problem that he has."

Over the weekend, Virginia Thomas left a voice-mail message for Hill, asking her to apologize for testifying at Thomas' confirmation hearings in 1991 that he harassed her. Hill said she had no intention of apologizing.

She testified that Thomas frequently recounted scenes from porno flicks with her. McEwen is now backing that up.

"He was obsessed with porn," she said. "He would talk about what he had seen in magazines and films, if there was something worth noting."

McEwen was never asked to testify at the hearings in part because she had been fired by Thomas, The Post reported.

The decision by Virginia Thomas to bring up the past is very curious indeed. It was pretty much dead and buried, forgotten by most people, and virtually unknown to younger people. Mrs. Thomas is a Tea Party activist, so perhaps she was looking for publicity for herself and her causes.

Or perhaps this was just eating away at her for the past two decades, and she just couldn't take it anymore.

Regardless of the reason, the story is back in the news so expect more people like McEwen to tell their stories.
