More happy news coming out of the TIFF market, Focus Features has acquired the rights to Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines with Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. (The subject of yet another bidding war, there was no way this one, from the acclaimed director of Blue Valentine and starring two of the hottest actors around, wasn’t going to find a home. )
With that news, two first clips have been released from the film. The first features Ryan Gosling and costar Ben Mendelsohn. It’s cut in with a TIFF red carpet interview with Cianfrance. (Turns out the title comes from the fact that the name of the city of Schenectady, which is the film’s locale, means “the place beyond the pines”).
The second (thanks to HitFix) features Bradley Cooper and Bruce Greenwood. Greenwood, a terrific journeyman actor, says so much here with so little.
Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Bradley Cooper), their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud. The Place Beyond the Pines is a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains.
The Place Beyond the Pines also stars Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen . Hopefully we’ll have a trailer and release dates soon. In the meantime, check out everything we have on the film here, including pics from the TIFF premiere.
