Jessica Chastain has, in my opinion, proven that she can do just about anything, from Shakespeare (Coriolanus), Oscar Wilde (Wild Salome), comedy (Madagascar 3) and of course, her forte, drama (Tree of Life, The Debt, The Help, Take Shelter etc etc etc).
So why shouldn’t she try her hand at a good old-fashioned horror movie? Especially one championed by Guillermo del Toro? It is the fact that Chastain signed on for Mama, that I’m willing to give it a shot.
Despite the fact that it’s being released in January. Check out this first trailer. Chastain’s almost unrecognizable with the cropped black hair, kohl rimmed eyes and the tatts. Oh and that’s Nikolaj “The Kingslayer” Coster-Waldau as her husband. Oh yeah… I’m in.
Guillermo del Toro presents Mama, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. When they are rescued years later and begin a new life, they find that someone or something still wants to come tuck them in at night.
Director Andres Muschietti is making his feature film debut with Mama, adapting his own short film with cowriters Neil Cross (writer/creator of “Luther”-another reason to give this a shot!) and Barbara Muschietti, under the tutelage of del Toro.
The film stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nellsse and will open in the US on January 13.
