A Quantic Wet Dream - Kara

| by

Leave it to Quantic Dream to leave us techies sweating with anticipation over a simple tech demo. Years ago, they did the same thing with their tech demo short, The Casting Call, which showcased some of the most impressive motion capture techniques of that time. Now, at this year’s Game Development Conference, they do so again with their lastest tech demo simply titled Kara, a seven-minute short that sees the birth of an android and her progression in a short amount of time.

During the video, an android is seen being contructed in a laboratory, beginning her new life. The overseer of the construction ask her to perform a few of her expected functions, such as speaking in German and French and even singing something in Japanese. Given the name Kara, she takes her first steps in life before finding out that she is merely to be sold as merchandise.

With a found sense of individuality, she exclaims that she thought to which the overseer then orders her disassembly since a malfunction has occurred leading her to believe she was real. After struggling and pleading her case with the final statement “I want to live” the overseer begins her construction over again and allows her to live. As she joins the other androids who share her likeness, Kara’s eyes hide a sense of life in an otherwise lifeless model.

This tech demo by Quantic Dream and Sony Computer Entertainment again shows the level of realism and possibilities left for game developers and makers can accomplish. Their last tech demo led to the development of the critically acclaimed Heavy Rain. If history serves us right, this new tech demo will hopefully lead to the creation of a newer game from this esteemed developer.
