Nicole Kidman looks back on the past 20 years, in an indepth interview telling WHO about her loves and heartbreak, the struggle to create the family of her dreams, and the moments—both dark and joyous—that have defined her eventful life.
Kidman, the star of WHO’s 20th Anniversary Collector’s Issue, discusses the turmoil she suffered in the wake of her marriage breakdown to Tom Cruise, her emotional experiences with adoption, pregnancy, miscarriage and surrogacy, her career highs and how her love for husband Keith Urban has moved her life into “a really beautiful place.”
“I got married really fast and really young,” Kidman, who was 23 when she tied the knot, told the magazine. “Then, when it didn’t work out, I had to really dig deep and find my way through depression. I have no regrets about all of it. It was all part of growing up.”
Kidman, 45, says part of her depression came from an inability to conceive a child.
Still, she doesn’t regret her relationship with Cruise because, “It got me Bella and Conner,” the two children she and Cruise adopted together during their 11-year union that she calls “a fantastic marriage for a long period.”
After her divorce in 2001, Kidman told Diane Sawyer, “I refuse to let it make me bitter or, I still completely believe in love,” Kidman said.
And she did find love again. Kidman married country crooner and fellow Aussie Keith Urban in 2006. She gave birth to their daughter, Sunday Rose, two years later. And Faith, Kidman’s second daughter with Urban, was born via surrogate in 2011.
“I’ve had an ectopic pregnancy, miscarriages and I’ve had fertility treatments. I’ve done all the stuff you can possibly do to try to get pregnant,” Kidman told Who magazine. “So the way it just happened with Sunday was like, ‘What?’ The percentages were so low. It is the miracle in my life.”
Us Weekly magazine writer, Jennifer Peros, told ABC News, “She wants people to know, ‘Yeah, I’m this huge superstar, but I’m going through struggles just like you.’”
With new life and a new movie, “The Paperboy,” opening Oct. 5, she appears to be in a good place.
Kidman is even talking about Cruise’s latest divorce, putting the lid on speculation she has counseled Katie Holmes.
“I never spoke to her,” Kidman said. “I wish all of them well, but I was not involved in any of that.”
