The much-awaited book 'Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief' is scheduled to go on sale on January 17, 2013.
The book is based on author Lawrence Wright's article about former Scientologist and Oscar-winning screenwriter Paul Haggis in The New Yorker, but will include new details on Scientology stars such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
The book will also cover the church's beginnings under science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard in the 1950s to its present controversial leader David Miscavige, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author said in a statement: "Scientology plays an outsize role in the cast of new religions that have arisen in the 20th century. I was drawn to write this book by the questions many people have about Scientology: What is it that makes this religion alluring? What do its adherents get out of it?"
"How can rational-seeming people subscribe to beliefs that others find incomprehensible? Why do popular personalities associate themselves with a faith that is likely to create public relations martyrdom?”
The book will cover the church's financial status and its standing in Hollywood.
