Melissa McCarthy has spoken up about the comment film critic Rex Reed made about her weight, saying that it did hurt her.
Reed said that she was a "female hippo" and a "gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious."
McCarthy would not discuss the comment for some time. But now, she is saying that it "crushed" her.
She said in "a strange epidemic of body image and body dysmorphia, comments like that just add to all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, 'That doesn't reflect on me.'"
McCarthy is married to Ben Falcone and has two daughters, Vivian, 6, and Georgette, 3. She said she is now thinking that Reed was in a bad place in life, and insists she is happy as ever.
"I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot," she said. "I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."
