Christian Bale has reiterated that the next Batman outing – The Dark Knight Rises – will be the last.
In an interview with E! News, Bale says this will be the last time he plays the superhero.
“The thing is that this will be, I believe, unless Chris [Nolan] says different, this will be the last time I’m playing Batman,” Bale says.
And in another sit-down with MTV Movie News, Bale says he is “very excited” about the next outing, “because if Chris maintains, this will be the last one,” he said, adding, “We’ve got to up it.”
Aside from that, Bale says he doesn’t know much more about the project than we do.
“Chris will let me know what I need to know when I need to know it,” Bale told MTV News while promoting The Fighter. “It’s our fourth movie together. I probably know a little bit more than some other people out there, but I think most people would be surprised at how little I do know.”
Production on The Dark Knight Rises is expected to kick off in New Orleans in April. So has Bale started prepping?
“It just hasn’t been necessary yet,” he continued. “I know he’ll give me plenty of time to prepare whatever I need to for it and I’ll discover it. He’s a pretty damn good filmmaker; I trust that he’s going to come up with something wonderful.”
Bale’s comments won’t come as a surprise to Batman aficionados. Nolan himself spoke about the next Batman flick being the final one back in October.
“I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters,” he told the Los Angeles Times.
“Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film, and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling.”
The Dark Knight Rises is set for a July 20, 2012 release.
