Bored of Yoga? 5 Ways to Get Back Into It

Is it just me, or is trying to be spiritual, dedicated, committed, driven a big old pain in the ass sometimes? Does the thought of yoga fill you with dread? An obligation not unlike compiling end-of-the year tax receipts? Do you yearn for those days when you skipped to your yoga room, desperate to explore? Do you yearn for a state of mind better characterized by ignorance is bliss, 4 sheets to the wind, immature, naive?? I do. It can be so tiring trying to "be a better person," a "more devoted yogini," "a longer meditator." Today I feel like tossing every explicative that suggests progress in the trash.

Today I just feel like saying f*** it.
But. I. Won't. And neither should you.

Instead, I'll suggest 5 simple ways to enliven your passion for the practice.

1. GET ON THE MAT.
And just sit. Be. Maybe move. Maybe not. See what happens.

2. CHANGE GEARS
Attend a class or watch a video that pushes the boundaries of what you normally do. If you tend to work hard, try restorative. If you tend to relax, try Vinyasa. The Yoga Journal has a large variety of 20-minute videos to choose from.

3. FIND A FUNKY POSE
And try it. Flip open Light on Yoga or Ray Long's The Key Poses of Yoga and try a pose you've never done before. Practice with no expectations. You might surprise yourself.

4. FOCUS
Awaken to your body. Learn the name of a new muscle group. Consider your calf muscles, hip flexors, or shoulders, and practice every asana with acute awareness of that area. Worry less about the poses and more about your mind-state in them.

5. READ A BOOK
about an enlightened person. You'll see that they, too, felt this way, struggled with commitment, fought discipline, boredom, and injury and came out on the other side with more passion, more character, and a stronger personal practice.

Whatever you do, just don't give up!
