The most expensive fish in the world, a 489-pound bluefin tuna, was sold for nearly $1.8 million at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market's auction on Jan. 5.
The bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of northeastern Japan, according to market official Ryoji Yagi, reports the Kyodo News agency.
The winning buyer, Kiyoshi Kimura, is the head of Kiyomura Co., which owns the Tokyo restaurant chain Sushi-Zanmai.
Kimura did not mention how much the tuna meat would sell for in his restaurants.
The Japanese eat 80 percent of all bluefin tuna caught worldwide.
