April 20 has turned into an important day over the years for a wide range of reasons.
First off, it is the day activists and users like to celebrate marijuana. The number "420" is a well-known code for pot, but many people don't know why. The most accepted story is that back in the early 1970s, a group of California students met at 4:20 pm every day to smoke pot. Word spread, and 420 became a thing of legend.
But there's more to this day.
-- April 20 is also the anniversary of the tragic shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 people inside their school in 1999 before turning their guns on themselves. Since then, many students have threatened similar shootings at their schools on this anniversary. Fortunately, all of the plots were foiled before they could be carried out.
-- April 20 is also Equal Pay Day -- the day women call attention to their pay disparity with men. The latest study shows woman make 78 cents for every dollar a man earns.
-- Perhaps the worst thing to ever happen on an April 20 happened in 1889 -- Adolph Hitler was born.
