An Australian gay rights campaign has released a controversial, but clever, new commercial advocating in support of marriage equality.
In the commercial, a pregnant woman and her male partner are at an ultrasound appointment as a medical technician examines her.
“Well everything seems to be coming along fine,” the technician says to the couple as they listen to the heart sounds. “Now, would you like to know what you’re having?”
The couple responds yes, and the technician answers, “You’re having a lesbian.”
The commercial then ends with the couple excited at the news as the words “Any child can be born gay. So marriage equality is every family’s issue” appear on the screen.
The commercial bluntly argues people are born gay and do not choose their sexuality or learn it from their parents. The group responsible for the advertisement campaign, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, explain the commercial is targeted at mainstream families in order to combat the stigma that gayness is not biological.
"Being lesbian or gay is not a choice," said spokesperson Shelley Argent. "It's got nothing to do with culture or parenting skills. It's just the way you are. You're born that way.”
In addition to the commercial, the group has also put up billboards depicting elated pregnant women with the words, “Congratulations, you’re having a lesbian.” One of the big billboard companies in Australia, GOA, donated $60,000 worth of billboard space to support the campaign.
The campaign comes shortly after neighboring New Zealand members of parliament voted to legalize same-sex and transgender marriage in April.
According to the campaign creator, Steve Minon, the ad was designed to "get people thinking, and challenge them a little.”
"We're trying to point out to any family that marriage equality can be your number one priority, without your knowing about it,” Minon said.
