World's Fattest Man Dies at Age 44, Was Losing Weight (Video)

Keith Martin once weighed 980 pounds and was the fattest man in the world.

It was revealed this week that Martin died of pneumonia in London in March while trying to lose weight.

Martin underwent surgery to remove three-quarters of his stomach in 2013, which was part of a documentary on the the UK's Channel 5 (video below).

The surgeon who performed the surgery on Martin wants all people in the UK to pay a fast-food tax, regardless of their weight.

"Keith, like many people, had some emotional issues and he turned to food for comfort," Dr. Kesava Mannur told The Mirror. "That type of behavior is nothing new, but what is new is how easy it is for people in that situation to buy a lot of cheap junk food."

"The government needs to make unhealthy fast food more expensive. Otherwise we'll continue to see more and more people like Keith," added Dr. Mannur."In Keith's case, it's a shame because he'd had successful surgery despite being high-risk because of his size. It was unlucky he then caught pneumonia."

Dr. Mannur also called for free surgery for overweight Brits with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30-35 and type 2 diabetes.

Martin reportedly ate 20,000 calories a day, which included large amounts of pizzas, hamburgers, Chinese food, sandwiches, chocolate, coffee and soft drinks.

He was able to lose 350 pounds before his death.

Martin discharged himself from the hospital after his stomach surgery against the advice of his doctors because he was homesick. Martin ended up back in the hospital in October 2013 with septic shock and dehydration.

Weeks later, he got pneumonia and stayed in the hospital until February 2014. However, he died in March 2014 because of pneumonia-related complications.

Martin blamed his overeating on his mother's death from pneumonia, which happened when he was 16.

"I started eating to ease the pain and before I knew it, I was binging every time something upset me," Martin said in 2012, noted the Daily Mail.
