A young mother and beauty blogger, famous on the Internet for sharing salon deals, opened up about her battle with skin cancer.
Lisa Guthrie, 33, has drawn in ten of thousands of people to her “Tried and Tested” Facebook page, where she shares deals and coupons for beauty salons and products she personally recommends, according to Chronicle Live.
The formerly tanning-obsessed mother of two has revealed she spent months privately battling skin cancer. She said she hopes others can learn from her mistakes.
“I tried to keep it under wraps because I had so much going on,” Guthrie said. “I put on a brave face, but the truth was that inside I was terrified.”
As a teen, Guthrie was obsessed with tanning. When she was 16-years-old, her parents bought her a tanning bed, which she used every night, according to the Daily Mail.
While most people use tanning beds for no more than 20 minutes a day, Guthrie said she would often fall asleep for up to an hour.
As Guthrie got older, she continued to sunbathe regularly, often taking naps outside in the sun wearing just a bikini, oil and low-SPF sunscreen.
Guthrie's habits quickly changed when she was given some scary news from her dermatologist.
After removing several irregular moles, the specialist told her she had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she told Chronicle Live. “I’d had moles removed in the past and there had never been any issues, so I thought this would be the same.”
Luckily for the young mother, specialists caught the cancer in its early stages. After five weeks of treatment, Guthrie is cancer-free, but will need to return for frequent check-ups to make sure the cancer does not return.
Since her diagnosis, Guthrie has changed her lifestyle in order to avoid the sun and says she wants to use her influence to warn others about the dangers of tanning.
“There are a lot of young girls out there just hammering the sunbeds. I did when I was younger,” she said.
“...My message to women out there is to protect and look after their skin as much as possible. There is a lot of fantastic spray tans out there, there is no need to be using sunbeds.”
