Despite controversy surrounding her decision to breastfeed her puppy, one woman reveals that her actions may have actually saved the young dog’s life.
The woman shared her story for the special TLC “Extreme Breastfeeding” and explained that she knew from the moment the dog latched to her breast that she was doing the right thing. Gauchita, the adorable baby Rottweiler, stopped feeding from its mother, so while the woman was breastfeeding her own son, she decided to try it out with the pup.
“I put the puppy to my breast and it started taking milk,” the woman revealed. “We made the decision to save a life. And thank god, we have Gauchita here today. My mum did not agree with what I was doing at all but then she got over it because it was my choice.”
The woman’s young son Cris says that at the time, he would take one breast while Gauchita would take the other.
“I would drink from this [breast] and Gauchita this one,” Cris explained.
Now, Gauchita is 5 years old and doing well, and because of the breastfeeding, she is completely attached to both the woman and her son Cris. Since the woman has gone public about her choice, she has received a lot of criticism.
“I went on a TV show and breastfed the dog. Many thought it was disgusting I was feeding a child from the same breast,” the mom acknowledged. “The people who did not agree were worried about the health and cleanliness for my child. But I would explain I would sanitise [sic] myself. I’m sad about criticisms, it’s my body.”
Dr. Fiona Giles explained to Metro UK that while many may think the act is weird, it’s actually more common than most realize.
“In history puppies have saved new mothers. Breasts could become too full of milk, become infected and the women die. Puppies were used to relieve this,” Giles said. “Cross-species breastfeeding is for spiritual or religious reasons, but sometimes it’s because they depend on the animal. If a goat dies they need to look after the kid. So they’ll breastfeed it to ensure their future.”
The mom is now reportedly pregnant with her second child, and she says that if the same situation came up again, she would breastfeed her animal without any second thought.
