Woman Drives Three Hours to Planned Parenthood After Doctor Shamed Her for Hickey (Audio)

Texas A&M student Athena Mason claims that she was shamed by her doctor in College Station, Texas for having a hickey and asking for birth control.

“I had a hickey and the doctor was just like, you shouldn’t be doing that. I’m like, ‘It’s a hickey, it’s nothing major.’ But I got a big lecture. [He said] my boyfriend was abusive and all of these things. And then I asked for birth control. I did not hear the end of that. So I said, 'Never mind, I’ll go somewhere else,'” Mason told KUT News (audio below).

Because of her doctor's unprofessional manner, Mason started going to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas to get birth control.

However, that clinic was shut down on Aug. 1 because of Texas' new strict abortion clinic rules.

Now, Mason drives between three and four hours to a Planned Parenthood in Fort Worth, Texas for its non-abortion services.

"A lot of my friends have come up to me and are like, 'Oh my gosh, I have an appointment next week, but it's closed now and I didn't even know,'" added Mason.

Another Texas woman, Cadence King, was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells on her cervix and became a patient at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan,Texas.

Now, she is struggling to find a new doctor and may have to drive hours away, or wait until a new woman's clinic opens in Bryan.

“I’m probably up against that window right now. There are some decisions that I need to make. And sticking your head in the sand is only good for so long,” King told KUT News.
