The victim in the now-infamous naked face eating attack -- named by the police as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo and pictured below -- is in critical condition in a Miami hospital, fighting for his life with over 75% of his face torn away.
The feral attacker has been identified as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene (pictured at left). He was shot dead by police at the scene.
Investigators are still baffled by what might have instigated the horrific attack that began as a naked tussle between two adult men and ended with one man on top of the other, consuming large portions of his victim’s face. Some early reports suggest that both men might have been homeless, according to the Daily News.
Miami law enforcement requested help from the public, asking for any witnesses to the incident to come forward and give their accounts. One man named Larry Vega has answered that call.
Vega was biking near the area of the attack and actually tried to intervene according to his account. He told Detective William Moreno that Eugene was growling like an animal and chewing on the victim’s face until police arrived and shot Eugene dead.
“This guy was like tearing him to pieces with his mouth,” said Vega. “So I told him, ‘Get off!’ The guy just kept eating the other guy away, ripping his skin.” Vega described the victim’s face after the attack as “a blob of blood.”
Police have yet to determine whether Eugene was under the influence of any drugs during the attack.
