Woman Has Surprise Birth After Seizure Scare

A Utah woman who was rushed to hospital with seizures later gave birth to her first child, even though she did not know she was pregnant.

Calvin Williams brought his wife, Brooke, to the hospital in Provo on the morning of Aug. 28 to diagnose the cause of her seizures, according to KSL. For Brooke, who is a survivor of brain cancer, pregnancy was the furthest thing from her mind.

"When Brooke was a little girl, she had a brain tumor [and] they told her that she of course wouldn't be able to have kids," Calvin said.

When doctors told Brooke she might be pregnant, the couple responded with disbelief.

"So they did blood work," Calvin said. "The guy came back and said, 'This level is common with someone who is pregnant.'"

Brooke was not only pregnant, she was 35 weeks pregnant, and doctors decided to perform an emergency cesarean section, according to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for the baby's care.

Later that day, Brooke and Calvin were holding their newborn daughter.

"Just a whirlwind," Calvin said of the experience. "It's been crazy. I've had every emotion, really."

And despite everything, the baby is doing well.

"It's crazy, it's a miracle," Calvin said. "Without any prenatal care, being a month early. She's 5 pounds 8 ounces, 18 inches long and she's great."

Their GoFundMe page, called "Brooke & Calvin's Big Surprise," was created Aug. 29 and had raised more than $2,500 in less than two days.

"Brooke and Calvin were totally unprepared for this new adventure in their lives," the page reads. "They have nothing for their sweet baby girl and no way to pay for all their fees that come with having a baby…. Any amount of donation is very much appreciated."

Calvin understands how difficult it is to imagine a woman not knowing she's pregnant, but he wants others to realize that his daughter is living proof that it does indeed happen.

"[Brooke] never had any sickness," he told KSL. "She never felt her stomach move. Me and my wife are the ones that make fun of those people."
