Authorities reportedly found a 3-month-old fetus inside a pipe of a New York home.
Its mother unknowingly had a miscarriage while using a restroom before accidentally flushing the fetus down the toilet, WABC News reports.
Police say they will not be pressing any charges against the woman. Still, however, an autopsy will be performed to confirm the exact cause of death.
While authorities say they will not punish the woman, some on social media argue the mother should face some consequences, and some do not believe the mother accidentally flushed the fetus down the pipes.
"Even if it was a miscarriage she should had not flush it down the toilet," wrote one woman on WABC's Facebook page.
"This brings tears to my eyes," chimed in another woman. "How absolutely awful."
Some went so far as to argue it was not a fetus, but a baby -- and that the woman should face the appropriate punishment. Others were more sympathetic.
"We have no clue what the story is, this is only a quarter of it," added another woman. "It is sad but it very well could have been a miscarriage by a young woman who didn't know."
"Most women miscarry while going to the bathroom," another chimed in. "It's not really a mystery and that's just life."
It's not the first time that such an incident has captured international attention, the Daily Mail reports.
Many were stunned after a mother in China flushed her newborn baby boy down the toilet -- and the infant survived.
"It was really a race against time because somebody could have flushed something down the sewer again at any stage, or the baby might have turned over and ended up face first in the filthy water and drowned," Suide County fire department squad leader Li Zhi said. "But we didn't want to smash the pipe because we thought that might also hurt or even kill the baby."
Zhi added that the baby still had his umbilical cord attached when they finally managed to rescue him.
