A New York City couple reportedly found out that they are expecting thanks to strange behavior from a Fitbit fitness tracker.
Reddit user YoungPTone, who identified himself as David, started a thread about problems with his wife’s Fitbit on Feb. 4, saying that the device was “showing her heartbeat being consistently high over the last few days.”
David told BuzzFeed that he "thought something was defective in the machine” when his wife’s resting heart rate was reading 110 beats per minute. He added that one day, his wife “logged 10 hours in the fat burning zone, which I would think to be impossible based on her activity level.”
Several Reddit users tried to offer explanations, saying that the problem may be caused by a recent firmware update. One Redditor had a different thought, however, and asked David if his wife could possibly be pregnant.
“Pregnancy is a strong possibility,” David responded. “ ... I might be a dad, YIKES. Now I gotta watch my own heart rate.”
David’s wife took a home pregnancy test to see if the Redditor was right, and David returned to the forum to share his news.
“I’m going to be a dad!” he wrote.
According to experts at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a quicker heart rate can indicate a possible pregnancy because your heart is working harder than normal, CBS News reports.
“It’s definitely a great story to tell [the baby] one day,” David told BuzzFeed.
The couple had been trying to conceive a baby for several months, according to David.
