Video: University of Tennessee Student Alexander Broughton Hospitalized for Alcohol Enema

University of Tennessee student Alexander Broughton was rushed to U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, after engaging in “butt chugging,” in which someone "drinks" alcohol via their rectum in a makeshift enema.

Broughton was suffering from alcohol poisoning with a blood-alcohol level of .40, a life-threatening level. He was later released, reports the NY Daily News.

Pi Kappa Alpha, which hosted the butt chugging, has been suspended for 30 days until a decision is made by the college. Pi Kappa Alpha was suspended for two weeks when three students were hospitalized after a hazing ritual in 2008, reports the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity released a statement saying the group tries to develop men of integrity, intellect and high moral character: "Although these activities are isolated to a small group of individuals, the Fraternity recognizes that this is an opportunity to increase the public’s awareness of what appears to be an unfortunate and extremely dangerous practice by some young people today."

Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk explained the dangers of alcohol enemas: “The abundance of capillaries and blood vessels [in the rectum] greatly heightens the level and speed of the alcohol entering the blood stream as it bypasses the filtering by the liver."
