Steve Crecelius thought he was a normal man. He was a father with six kids, but that all changed when he went to the hospital five years ago with a kidney stone attack.
The Denver, Colorado man was told by medical personnel that he was born with both male and female sex organs, which is a hermaphrodite, or as some call it, "intersex."
Hermaphrodites are born with male and female sex organs, with one set being predominant.
Steve, who now calls himself Stevie, told KDVR.-TV: “I had a kidney stone and we’re in the emergency room. The nurse is reading the ultrasound and says, 'Huh, this says you’re a female.’”
While Stevie was stunned, she was somewhat comforted: “It validated everything I had always felt inside.I remember wearing my mom’s clothes and makeup, very secretly, not telling anybody.
“When I was 17, I was working my first part-time job at a TV station as a floor cameraman and the person in charge said to me, ‘You know, you walk like a queer.' And I thought I was hiding who I was, and I wasn’t.”
Even though she has both male and female sex organs, Stevie started living like a woman: “How do you tell your kids that, well, it’s no longer dad, it’s dadette? Within a few minutes, all of them said, ‘I don’t care dad; I love you for who you are.”
Five years later, Stevie uses hormones and is still married to her wife, Debbie Crecelius, who told KDVR.-TV: “I didn’t sign on for this, but who signs on for anything? She’s the same person she was as a he on the inside.”
“She relates to my heart and soul, and I still relate to hers. And I think that that’s the essence of true love.”
