Student Obstetrician Takes Selfie With Woman Giving Birth (Photo)

Calls for a student obstetrician in Venezuela to be investigated have occurred after he posted a selfie to Instagram of himself next to a woman in labor (see photo below).

“Lady I can deliver your baby but first let me take a selfie,” the photo’s caption read on Daniel Sanchez’s Instagram page.

The photo was taken at a Venezuela hospital and shows a woman, naked from the waist down, giving birth. A doctor other than Sanchez is delivering the baby while he snaps the picture next to the woman.

Sanchez said his team “bring[s] kids into the world and reconstruct p******,” and that women who go to them for services can expect to be “brand new, like a car with zero [kilometers] on the clock,” VICE reports.

A petition has been created on by The Roses Revolution, a global movement against obstetric violence, for the hospital to investigate Sanchez’s actions of posting pictures to social media during medical procedures.

The petition reads:

“English Health professionals and students dealing with mothers should have an impeccable [behavior] at all times that respects the emotional and physical needs of women in labour and their babies. Violation of their rights many times constitutes a crime and at all times shows an abuse of power, a bad practice and perpetuates the abuse of women in situations of vulnerability. This is established by the World Health [Organization] and it is internationally known as obstetric violence. It is absolutely unacceptable and illegal to take pictures of the women or babies admitted to the Maternity Services without their knowledge and without their consent. It is just simply inappropriate in the professional interaction. And to them publish it on social media with sexually discriminatory comments it is extremely worrying and an embarrassment to any hospital. For all that, we petition to your hospital to investigate this student and for you to take the measures that you consider appropriate. In any case we hope that those measures will establish a precedent from which the new generations of professionals exercise their profession in the most absolute respect for the birthing women and their families, and their profession.”

Over 5,000 people have signed the petition calling for an investigation into his conduct, reports The Daily Mail. Sanchez has since set his Instagram account to private.

Jesusa Ricoy of The Roses Revolution, the petition’s creator, received an email response from Sanchez wherein he apologized for any offense and said he did not take the picture himself.

Sanchez goes on to say that the woman in the picture is being respected because “you cannot see her genitals or her face.” He also claims she consented to the photograph being taken.

Signers of the petition have plenty of heated reasons as to why they have shown their support.

“This is absolutely disgusting [behavior],” Karen Chitty of Australia wrote. "He should never be allowed to [practice] again. Ever.”

“This is not the practice of a trusted Doctor...Maybe he should switch to Proctology, because he's a real as***le!!!” MaryLou DiNcolas of Oakland Park, Florida, wrote.

“Revolting and heinous [behavior] by an individual sworn to uphold ethics,” Jennifer Bruce of Calgary, Canada, wrote. "Disgusting.”

The Roses Revolution hopes that the Venezuelan hospital Sanchez practices at will “take the measures [they] consider appropriate” in regard to his behavior.
