Top 10 New American Dietary Guidelines

Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the latest edition of the (New) Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2010).

Here are what I see as the TOP Ten changes since 2005 based on the Executive Summary released.  (More user friendly tools and a “next generation food pyramid” will be released in the coming months):

10. Eat less! (“account for all foods and beverages consumed”)

9. Reduce sedentary behavior; increase physical activity. (Sounds simple enough.)

8. Consume appropriate calories for your age and life stage – i.e., childhood versus teen versus adult, etc.  (Act your age.)

7. Choose seafood over chicken and meat.  Eat a variety of proteins including beans, soy, nuts and seeds and choose proteins low in fat.  (What will the beef industry say?  Ouch.)

6. Half of all grains consumed should be whole grains.  (Hello whole wheat.)

5. Increase vegetable and fruit intake.  (Change should be evident on new pyramid.)

4. Limit synthetic sources of trans fats, such as partially hydrogenated oils and solid fats. (No, no, no to lard!)

3. Limit consumption of refined grains.  (Goodbye white flour, white rice – anything white!)

2. Replace sugary drinks with water.  (Full-stop.)

1.The most specific change – get rid of salt!Reduce sodium intake to to 2,300 mg for general population and 1500 mg for persons over 51, all African Americans, all suffering from hypertension, kidney disease or diabetes.  (1,500 mg reduction applies to 50% of US population).
