Since I'm not a one-size-fits-all kind of person, I like the latest book from Kristen Schultz Dollard and John Douillard, The Yoga Body Diet: Slim and Sexy in 4 Weeks (Without the Stress). I know, I know -- the name sounds like something out of the mouth of a marketing spin master. If you go beneath the surface and get beyond the sounds-like-every-other-diet/weight loss-hype title, you'll find the tools you need to create a healthy lifestyle plan for your specific needs.

Yoga and Ayurveda in Plain English

Likes: In a universe of health and weight loss books that have you counting, measuring, combining food, following ratios, going to food extremes, and doing potentially dangerous things to your body, this book is a breath of fresh air. It lays out a gradual, easy-to-follow plan to detox your body, increase your overall health and fitness and eat foods that compliment your Ayurvedic type. This book is easy to understand (it doesn't go too in-depth -- instead, it gives you just what you need) and includes basic information on Ayurveda and yoga. Although the book offers a good deal of information, it's concisely written so the reading time is minimal. The book includes:

--A brief history of yoga and Ayurveda
--A quiz to help you determine your Ayurvedic type or Dosha
--Tips to balance your body -- including simple breathing techniques and general eating guidelines
--A summary of each Dosha along with recommended foods (which can be used as shopping lists)
--A chapter devoted to each week of the Yoga Body Diet
--A maintenance plan
--Yoga routines -- complete with pictures and directions
--Recipes for each Dosha

I especially like the 4-Day Detox on page 88 -- it's an excellent way get your body back on track if you've been filling it with junk food.

My favorite part of the book is the extensive recipe section. The dishes are scrumptious and easy to make. I made the Roti last night and it's absolutely delicious. I am not a dame of the kitchen by any means, yet I could easily follow these recipes. I loves the spices used and the range of tastes each dish offered. Yum!

Dislikes: I'm not a huge fan of labeling yoga as a workout and the yoga sequences in the book are described as "tailored weight-loss workouts." Boo hiss! On the bright side, the authors debunked lots of yoga myths and approached the yoga portions of the book with a "you don't have to be a yoga expert" attitude. I like the approachability of it. As soon as you start reading the book, you get a sense of "beginners are welcome and able" to do this program.

There's not much about this book to dislike, as far as I'm concerned. If you're looking to enhance your health and drop a few pounds without having to fill your brain with nutritionist speak, I encourage you to read this book. Try it -- even if you don't lose weight, the lifestyle changes described in the book are beneficial for everyone.
