A Texas man has spent the past 15 years of his life labeled as a sex offender, all because he had sex with his wife when they were both teenagers.
Frank Rodriguez, now 34 years old, was 19 when he met his now-wife Nikki. She was 15, and her mother didn't like it. So she took Nikki to a police station and reported that Rodriguez was having sex with a minor. The age of consent in Texas is 17.
The mother rescinded her complaint the next day, but it was too late. It was now a police matter. Rodriguez was charged with statutory rape. In order to avoid going to prison, Rodriguez pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to probation and had to register as a sex offender.
15 years later, that status stands, and it has become a major problem in their lives. The couple appeared on "The Today Show" to discuss it:
