Subway To Drop Artificial Ingredients From Food

Subway, the popular sandwich chain, recently announced that it is going to stop using artificial flavors, colors and preservatives in North America by 2017.

Elizabeth Stewart, director of corporate social responsibility for Subway, told the Associated Press that the company is in the process of removing caramel color from its roast beef and ham, and plans to swap proprionic acid (preservative) out for vinegar in its turkey.

Stewart added that the eateries will drop banana peppers that have artificial dye Yellow No. 5.

In 2014, Subway removed a chemical, Azodiacarbonamide, from its bread after food blogger Vani Hari, of FoodBabe.com, claimed that Azodiacarbonamide was used in products such as yoga mats and rubber for shoes.

According to USA TODAY, Subway said at the time, "We are already in the process of removing Azodiacarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts despite the fact that it is an FDA approved ingredient. The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon."
